We are all at different stages of understanding. And just because we don't have perfect understanding of all things, does not mean that God cannot use us.
All we need is to be willing to do His will, and He can use us.
In Luke 9:51-55, the disciples ask Jesus if He would like for them to command fire to come down from heaven to destroy those in the city who did not welcome them. But Jesus rebuked them, and told them that He did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
The disciples, even up to Jesus death, believed that Jesus was going to free them from Roman oppression and set up an earthly kingdom; but that is not why Jesus came 2,000 years ago. His kingdom is not of this earth.
Despite the disciples' many misunderstandings, Jesus still used them to give the gospel to the world. If eternal torment is a false doctrine, why did God use Jonathon Edwards sermon to bring people to repentance?
%26gt;Do you believe the sermon without the eternal
%26gt;torment part would have been more what God wanted?
I believe God would rather correct doctrine be taught. I don't believe that God ever wants doctrinal error to be taught. But when humans do err, God can still bring good out of it. (Romans 8:28)

It isn't a false doctrine and that was the one people needed at the time. Contrary to popular belief, the 18th century in America was a time of widespread lack of religious belief. The only reason some churches existed was because the colonial governments enforced attendance. Mr. Edwards gave them a wake-up call that they had forgotten about.
Is it really repentance if you were frightened into it?
That famous sermon actually did more to end the hold that hard line religion had on America. People began to be ashamed of it, and joined other sects that advocated a more loving God.
His words do not prove an eternal torment, and there is no proof that God used him to do anything.
Many of these preachers are doing so in ignorance. Others are teaching intentionally the doctrines of demons to confuse others. The Bible warned us of this....
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them鈥攂ringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. ~ 2 Peter 2:1-3
Eternal torment is not a false doctrine, but it is vastly misunderstood by modern Christianity because in order to understand it fully, there's a whole boat-load of other doctrines that must be understood as well in order for a believer to understand what eternal torment is and why it must exist.
God brings people to repentance through many different means, but mostly it's the one of salvation and grace. Billy Graham has brought MILLIONS to repentance through THIS POSITIVE message...
... of course, TECHNICALLY... it is the Holy Spirit who brings true repentance and salvation.
MARANATHA! Come, Lord Jesus, COME!
Ohhhhh, I see, I thought you were talking about that fake TV psychic guy named Johnathan Edwards. Wow, listening to him for an extended period of time would really be hell. Hellfire? Still a winner out there in the revival tents isn't it? Well, gotta go now! Nice to see you again, Jeannie!
Great question. God did use Edwards in a mighty and powerful way. He is probably the greatest Christian philosopher/theologian in American history. Edwards preached hell not with anger, but with compassion. Sad, preachers today avoid the subject like the plague trying to please modern culture. When they do that, they are editing the Bible and departing from the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Being ';positive'; without the Bible is idolatry and is misrepresenting God and Scripture. Jesus preached more about hell that He did about heaven. Why is that? Could it be that hell is so horrible a place that He warned people the seriousness of repenting of sin and trusting in Him for deliverance and salvation? (grace). Matthew 25:46 - Jesus called hell a place of eternal punishment. This was not made up by some preacher or church. Why do people only want the seemingly kind things that Jesus said or did and leave out all His warnings?
I think it is literally false, but maybe it made people realize the graveness of sin or something like that. I don't think God wrote these hellfire sermons, but God can use any and everything for good, in one way or another.
God not exist, not make Johnathan Edwards do anything, he do it himself, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine not heed Reveernd Edwards, they are Deists.
It is not a false doctrine.
People understand it and do not want to go there.
They have a choice to go there or not.
They simply choose to ignore God's son, Jesus.
It is not God's will that they go to eternal hellfire.
Where is Hell ?? We must first figure out if Hell is real and not a place made up to scare the congregation into obedience by those seeking to use religion to control the masses.
It is wrong to say that ';eternal torment is a false doctrine';
god is NOT real.
